Role-Playing: Who am I?
By: Majik and Essence
101 Questions You Should Be Able to Answer About Your Character
Basics
1. What is your full name? Do you have a nickname?
Kalyn Brooksdale (it's pronounced "Kay-linn", not "Colin"), and if someone is calling me something behind my back, I want to know about it.
2. How old are you? When is your birthday?
I'm 23.
3. Where were you born? Where do you live now? Are you patriotic?
Man, slow down with the rapid-fire questions!
I was born to the North. I don't currently "live" anywhere, but I've got a few places I can stay to hide from the law.
It's hard to be patriotic when you're always moving. I like the world I live in, though, and I support it. Does that count?
4. Who are/were your parents? (Names, occupations, personalities, etc.)
I don't believe that's any of your business. Though it's been said that I take after my mother.
5. Do you have any siblings? What are/were they like?
My sister lives to the East, currently. She's a performer in a travelling band of entertainers. She trained to be a Shadowdancer, and is incredibly gorgeous.
She taught me everything she knew of the trade, and even gave me my knife. I love my knife. Countess Vanessa Slicington the Eunuch-maker.
6. What is your occupation?
I work for myself, slick. I do what I want, when I want, how I want. If that means "borrowing" the appropriate funds from disreputable men, who am I to disagree?
7. How tall are you? How much do you weigh?
I'm roughly 5'7, and I refuse to tell you how much I weigh. It may be in my hips, but I'm proportional, mister. None of this stick-figure crap for me.
8. What color is your hair? What color are your eyes?
My hair is a light brown, which is sort of plain. I like it that way.
My eyes are blue, and I like them too.
9. What is your race?
Human, and proud of it.
10. To which social class do you belong?
...haha. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA oh wait, you're serious.
11. Do you consider yourself to be attractive? Do others?
I certainly think so, and I'd like to think others do, too. It's helped me get past a guard or twelve in my lifetime, that's for sure.
12. What is your style of dress?
Loose and flowing when I'm out and about, though never loose enough to hamper movement. When I'm...otherwise occupied...I tend to wear leather clothing fairly close-fitting, though I always keep as much covered as I can.
I don't know who makes the women's metal armor in the shops, but I wouldn't be caught dead in chainmail that revealing. It doesn't look very protective, anyway. Especially since you can easily slip a blade into a woman's heart with the amount of cleavage showing through their "armor".
I tend to wear dark and earthy colors.
13. Do you have any scars? Tattoos? Birthmarks? Other unique physical features?
Are you kidding? If someone in my line of work intentionally placed easily identifiable marks on herself, she deserves to be caught.
As far as scars, I don't really have any noticeable ones, since I heal fairly quickly. There are a couple I do have in some fairly hard-to-get-to places, which makes it easy for me to hide them.
I also think my feet are a bit oddly shaped.
14. Do you have any allergies, diseases, or other physical weaknesses?
Yes.
You must be insane if you think I'm going to tell you what they are.
15. Are you right- or left-handed?
Right.
16. What does your voice sound like?
It's a bit on the low side, but nothing too erroneous. I'm also fairly good with inflections.
17. What kind of vocabulary do you use?
Depends on what I'm doing. I usually talk like I am now, but I can and do use large, impressive-sounding words when I'm trying to fit in with the snotty nobles, and I can blend in well when I'm hiding amongst peasants.
18. List three quirks or other defining characteristics.
Quirks? I don't think I have any quirks. You should ask someone else that.
19. How often do you bathe? Do you wear perfumes?
Bathing is very important; you don't want smell when you're being sneaky. And perfume is a liability in my line of work. I use it only when I'm trying to blend in at social functions.
20. What kind of facial expression do you commonly wear (dour glare, wry smile, etc)?
My sister says I always have a self-satisfied smirk on my face, except when I'm trying to...persuade someone. In those cases, I try to look sultry.
21. Do you use body language? How?
You must be joking. When don't I?
22. Do you have a commonly used saying?
Oh, gods, I hope not. That's just another thing that the authorities could trace back to me.
Childhood
23. What is your earliest memory?
Watching my sister throw knives at a target. I wanted to try, but she said I was too little, so she gave me a couple balls to play with.
I loved those balls.
Stop looking at me like that, jerk. Actual balls. I was three, damn it.
24. How much schooling have you had? Did you enjoy it?
My parents wanted the best for me, so they sent me to the best school money could buy.
I hated it there. It was boring. The work was too easy, so I started playing pranks on people to pass the time.
25. Where did you learn most of your knowledge and skill?
Depends on what you mean. If you're talking about reading and writing and math and politics and science and magic theory and crap like that, I learned it at the school I went to when I was younger.
As far as my knowledge and skills of my trade, I practiced at school, and learned the rest from my sister when I was thirteen.
26. How would you describe your childhood in general?
Fairly nice, all things considered. Sure, it was boring - except when I was with my sister - but I really can't complain. I have parents who love me - and wouldn't understand the way I live my life right now, but that's all right - and a home I can always go back to if I need it. Not that I ever will, but it's nice to have a backup, you know?
27. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A Shadowdancer, like my sister. And also a paladin. A shining knight of law and justice and shiny.
Ironic, no?
28. When and with whom was your first kiss?
Ah, Aloyisius Turnbuckle, back in school. I was twelve, he grabbed me when I wasn't paying attention. Then he started telling people that I was "easy".
Oh, I found a way to get back at him. Let's just say that being strung up in the mess hall, naked save the rope he was trussed in, at breakfast? Does wonders for manners.
29. Are you a virgin? If not, when and with whom did you lose your virginity?
That is none of your business.
30. Do you have a notorious or celebrated ancestor? Does that affect you?
I don't think so. My grandfather was a really amazing person, though, so does that count? I love my grandfather. Taught me to stand up for myself and protect myself, especially when the boys get grabby. Aloyisius Turnbuckle has my grandfather to thank, really.
Influences
31. What do you consider the most important event of your life so far?
Deciding that I didn't want to follow my sister's path, but rather making my own.
32. What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Hitting the target from thirty yards, when I was fifteen. My sister actually said that I would be a good Shadowdancer if I worked at it.
33. What is your greatest regret?
Disappointing my mother. She wanted me to be an actress.
34. What is the most embarrassing or shameful thing ever to happen to you?
I'd rather not talk about it, but thank you for bringing up memories that I've worked hard to repress. I appreciate it.
35. Do you have any secrets? If so, what are they?
Well, they're secret, aren't they?
36. What is the most evil thing you have ever done?
Well, I wouldn't call it evil. I'd call it "justice". Ever wonder why I call my knife "Countess Vanessa Slicington the Eunuch-maker"? Well, let's just say that a couple years ago, I was walking through the alleys of Wolfsbrook and a would-be rapist accosted me.
He was surprised that I was able to defend myself. He was very scared when I decided to teach him a lesson.
I dropped him off at the local constabulary, with a sealed bag containing...evidence.
I think there's a plaque hanging in the Wolfsbrook brothel, actually, for the services done by the "Anonymous Benefactor". I guess it goes to show that if you disfigure a rapist, you'll be praised by whores.
37. When was the time you were the most frightened?
I don't get scared. No, not me. Not ever. Especially not of creepy slimy kobolds.
Eeeewwwwww.
Wait, I wasn't supposed to tell you my weaknesses! I demand that you change my answer to "nonresponsive". Right now.
It will be edited before it goes in print? Well, okay. But if it isn't, I'll find you later.
38. Have you ever traveled outside of your country? If so, to where?
Well, I once spent a few months in the South Islands. There were some fun Jungle Trolls there that I lived with. Jungle Trolls really get a bad rep, you know? Sure, just because their mainland cousins eat people, they're all bad. No, Jungle Trolls are a fun-loving bunch who may or may not be cannibals. I haven't figured that out yet, but I never did see a graveyard...
Beliefs
39. What is your alignment? (Law/Chaos/Good/Evil, Lightside/Darkside, etc - whatever applies)
Well, I'm Good, definitely. And I like to think that I'm a bit more Neutral on the other axis, but I've definitely got Chaotic leanings. So I guess Chaotic for now.
40. Are you basically optimistic or pessimistic?
Optimistic! Everything always goes my way. If it knows what's good for it.
Kidding! Kinda!
41. Do you believe in a god? If so, which one and why?
Look, it's hard not to believe in something when you've seen people converse with them. Magic comes from somewhere, you know? But I don't bother with the gods, and they don't bother with me. We've got an understanding, y'know? We leave each other alone.
42. Do you believe in an afterlife?
I believe in reincarnation, actually. It just feels right, how when you die, your soul is used for an entirely new person.
43. What is your greatest fear?
(This answer has been crossed out and changed to "nonresponsive".)
44. What makes your character angry? Sad? Happy? Why?
What have I told you about the rapid-fire questions? Come on, now.
All right. Things that make me angry? Um...nothing in particular. Just the standard stuff, like when someone's an ass to me or someone else.
Nothing really makes me sad, either. I move on and find something else to think about. Well, except when my grandfather died. That still makes me sad. I love him so much.
45. Do you think people are basically good or basically evil?
People are blank slates. Their choices and experiences in life guide their paths from then on.
46. What are your views on politics? Religion? Sex?
Politicians are funny. They argue about the silliest things (Where to put a "No Horses" sign? Come ON.) and they usually have a lot of gold on them.
As far as religion goes, like I said, the gods and I leave each other alone.
Sex? People put too much importance on it. They use it to define their relationships, or to exert control over another person. It's sickening. Sex should be just a private thing.
47. What are your views on gambling, lying, theft, and killing?
Please tell me you're joking.
Well, actually, I don't like killing. Self-defense, yes - especially against monsters that lurk out in the shadows - but I don't unless I have to.
Everything else? Totally in favor.
48. How far will you go to defend your beliefs?
Not real far. People can believe what they want. You can present your case, but the decision is theirs to make. And they can't change your beliefs, either; only you can do that.
There would be much less war if more people realized this.
49. How much do you value money?
Moreso now than when I was a girl, that's for sure. Growing up rich tends to skew your perception of value.
Living on my own, though, means that I know how far a copper piece can take me.
50. In your opinion, what is the most evil thing any human being could do?
Take my money.
That, or slaughter innocents for pleasure. You know. Whichever comes first.
51. Do you believe in self-sacrifice for the greater good?
It's more of a theory. One that I would prefer not to test.
52. Do you believe in the existence of soul mates and/or true love
The little girl in me says yes. The young woman in me is still hopeful, but doubtful.
53. Are you superstitious?
Superstition is just a misunderstanding of magic.
54. How much do you respect the beliefs and opinions of others?
I respect them quite a bit. I just don't hold kindly to people trying to force those beliefs and opinions on me.
55. How honest are you about your thoughts and feelings?
Depends on what you mean. I'm honest to myself, and to my family. It's nobody else's business, though.
56. Do you have any biases or prejudices?
Ewww. Slimy, slimy kobolds.
Dealing With Others
57. Who is the most important person in your life, and why?
My sister, wherever she is right now. She and I will occasionally cross paths still, but not long enough.
58. Who is the person you respect the most? Despise the most? Why?
Aside from grandfather? I do respect my parents. They raised me (somewhat, though I doubt shoving me off to a boarding school counts as "raising"), and provided for me, and my dad took me fishing every summer.
59. Do you have a significant other? Who?
Nope.
60. Do you have a lot of friends? Who is your best friend?
I don't have a lot of friends, just people who I trust to shelter me every once in a while.
61. How do you relate to members of the same race? Class? Sex?
Humans are a funny group. Quite varied. I get along with them as well as I can, but everyone's different.
Rogues are cool. I get along with them fairly well.
In general, women are annoying. Screeching and heaving bosoms and...ugh. I can't stand it. What's worse is that those types of women are the ones that the men all go for.
62. How do you relate to members of a different race? Class? Sex?
Pretty much the same as I get along with humans; everyone's different. Same with classes and men.
63. Have you ever been in love? If so, describe what happened.
(This answer has been crossed out and changed to "nonresponsive". There are also a few flecks of blood on the parchment in this area.)
64. What do you look for in a potential lover?
A sense of humor and an open mind. That's all you really need.
65. How close are you to your family?
Admittedly, not as close as I should be. I write my parents a letter every month, but I never get one in return. I should probably visit them sometime.
66. Do you want a marriage, family, and/or children?
Probably eventually. Though I'm not really thinking about it now. If someone comes along, they'll come along, but I'm not going to bother right now.
67. Do you tend to argue with people, or avoid conflict?
Pfsh, pushing buttons is what I do best.
68. Are you a listener or a talker?
I like to think of myself as an "equal opportunist".
69. How long does it usually take for you to trust others?
...a while. I have to be used to their presence, and have observed various examples of how trustworthy they are.
70. Do you hold grudges?
Only for as long as it takes for me to return the "favor". After that, we're a clean slate as far as I'm concerned.
71. Do you tend to take on leadership roles in social situations?
Occasionally, though I prefer not to.
72. Do you like interacting with large groups of people?
Oh, of course! People are fun to be around! Besides, the more people there are, the easier it is for me to blend in.
73. How well do you express yourself?
Fairly well. You've probably noticed how talkative I am. Makes my friends wonder how I got to be so good at silent movement.
74. How quickly do you judge others?
Not very quickly at all. Mistakes are mistakes.
75. Do you care what others think of you?
I used to.
76. Do you have any enemies? How or why are they your enemy?
I don't know, I think Aloyisius Turnbuckle might have to say something about that. Aside from him, though, I don't really think so.
Personal Taste and Opinions
77. What is your favorite pastime? Color? Food? Possession?
Rapid! Fire! Questions! Come ON.
I generally like watching kids play ball in the fields behind small downs. In the larger cities, the kids play in the streets, or back alleys, or wherever they can find some room to stretch out and be kids. It's refreshing.
My favorite color is blue. My favorite food is anything spicy. My most treasured possession, though, is the knife that my sister gave me.
78. What are your preferences in arts and/or entertainment?
I like lute music. Bards and Virtuosos with lutes are instantly hot. I also love a good dance, though that's left over from hanging around my sister a lot.
79. Do you smoke, drink, go whoring, or use drugs? Why or why not?
...go whoring. Me. Well, some women might be into that, but I'm not.
As far as anything else? Drinking is good when you're relaxing with people you trust, but only enough to relax. Anything that impairs how your body reacts is not a good thing when you're someone like me.
80. How do you spend a typical Saturday night?
Depends on if I've got a job lined up. If so, I do that. If not...I meander about, looking for something to do.
81. What is your most cherished fantasy?
...fantasy in what context?
82. How long is your attention span?
Longer than yours, no doubt.
83. Do you laugh a lot? What do you find funny?
Laughter is a wonderful thing. If you're not laughing, there's something wrong.
And everything in life is funny, once you find the humor in it.
84. Is there anything that shocks or offends you? If so, what?
Anything I'm not expecting shocks me, but I have yet to find something offensive to me.
Well, aside from taking my hard-earned money. Or insulting my family. Or probably the slaughter of innocents.
85. How do you deal with stress?
I practice my aim. I go out to the nearest non-druid-protected tree, scratch a small target, then stand back and throw my knives.
86. How much athletic ability do you have? Artistic?
I'm fairly athletic; I can run and jump and carry heavy things for a while. I walk pretty much everywhere. I'm also fairly flexible; you need to be when you have to find places to hide in short notice.
87. Do you like animals? Do you like children?
Yes, and sometimes, respectively.
88. Are you spontaneous, or do you always need to have a plan?
Plan if it helps, but sometimes you just need to go with the flow.
89. What are your pet peeves?
Oh, nothing in particular. 'cept maybe kobolds.
Self-Image
90. What is your greatest strength as a person? Weakness?
My mind, I think. And I haven't discovered a weakness yet.
91. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
My toes.
92. Are you generally introverted or extroverted?
Extroverted.
93. Do you like yourself?
Of course! How can I not?
94. Do you have a daily routine? How do you feel if your day is interrupted?
No routine, because I'm doing something different every day.
95. What goal do you most want to accomplish in the next six months? Your lifetime?
I want to earn a name for myself. Not "The Brooksdale Daughter", not "Calyn's Sister", but a name of my very own.
96. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years? 20 years?
Probably doing the same thing I'm doing now, though eventually I'll want to settle down. Eventually.
97. If you could choose, how would you want to die?
Bursting into flames on a horse-drawn carraige.
98. What is the one thing you would like to be remembered for after your death?
My courage and loyalty. And my intelligence. And my beauty. And my modesty.
99. What three words would you use to best describe your personality?
Coolest woman ever?
100. What three words would others probably use to describe you?
Hottest woman ever. Oh, yeah.
101. Why are you risking your life to adventure?
Partially, for the challenge. Partially for the rewards. Partially for the glory and honor. And partially because it sounded like fun at the time.
